Model of a granary

This model shows a building with a single access door. Two sack-bearers walk along an L-shaped corridor towards the heart of the building, where the grain is weighed and counted, before the granaries can be filled. A man bends over the bushels of grain as the scribe looks on, tallying the harvest on his papyrus. Behind him, a man sits under a canopy to protect him from the sun – a position usually reserved for important figures. These funerary models are typical of private tombs from the Middle Kingdom (around 2035-1680 BCE). Like the reliefs or paintings on the walls in other periods, their role was to provide for the needs of the deceased, eternally, through magical transubstantiations.
