A support association for the project

Initiated by the Development Agency of the Lens-Liévin urban area, the Louvre-Lens Association (A2L) is intended to facilitate communication between the Musée du Louvre and the local authorities behind the project (the Nord-Pas de Calais region, the Pas-de-Calais département, the CommunAupôle Lens-Liévin, and Lens city council).

It has three major goals:
- to assist the success of the Louvre-Lens by proposing initiatives originating in civil society;
- to sensitize and inform the population about the issues at stake in the Louvre-Lens project;
- to combine and promote initiatives relating to the Louvre-Lens.

The president of the association is Gérald Vairon, who is also behind the creation of the support committee for the candidacy of the City of Lens to host the new museum. The members of its board of directors come from various backgrounds: founders, individuals, development agencies, firms, and associations.

The Louvre-Lens Association sees the Louvre-Lens as a flagship museum for the Euroregion, a cultural springboard, and a factor in social cohesion. The worldwide renown of the future museum must attract visitors not only to Lens but to the whole region.

Seven working committees

Although the association makes considerable use of studies carried out by the Development Agency of the Lens-Liévin urban area and other coalfield development agencies, it has also formed its own working groups on the following seven themes:
- communication and newsletter;
- relationships with other museums, networking;
- enhancement of heritage and environment;
- federation of initiatives and associations;
- issues concerning young people;
- spin-offs for the region and its firms;
- international relationships.

Over 1,500 members

The Louvre-Lens Association now has over 1,500 members, not only from Lens and the Nord-Pas de Calais region but also from elsewhere in France and abroad. Annual membership costs €5.
